National Road Safety Week

National Road Safety Week(External link) (NRSW) is an initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partnering road safety organisations and government to highlight the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it. Every year, more than 1200 people are killed and 44,000 seriously injured on Australian roads. National Road Safety Week is a time for us to remember those people who have experienced trauma on our roads. We urge communities to come together and make their pledge to ensure the roads are safe for everyone. To drive so others survive.

Road safety messages were spread all across WA during National Road Safety Week. Highlights include working with 88 plus organisations to implement NRSW on a national level as the host state.

22 community events were held thanks to grants we awarded in partnership with RAC WA. More than half of the event grants were awarded to organisations in regional WA, from the Great Southern to the Pilbara.

Thank A Traffic Warden

School Traffic Wardens play a vital role in ensuring school students have safe commutes to school each-day. They are the warm and joyful smile to start to the school day.

In ensuring these fabulous volunteers feel the gratitude parents and the wider WA community feel for them, Thank a Traffic Warden Day is an effective way to achieve that.

With the help of WA Police in spreading thank-you stickers, and as well as WA stakeholders such as DOT with 'Dan the Traffic Man' this year, school Traffic Wardens were certainly feeling the love and appreciation.

Road trauma is the second leading cause of death and serious injury of Australian young people aged between 15 and 25. To change these tragic statistics, we need young people to lead and advocate for road safety among their peers.

Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, the ‘Road Safety Starts with Me’ event takes a fresh approach to road safety education and is available free of charge to all participants.

The full-day Summit aims to lead year 10 to 12 students on a learning journey, developing road safety awareness and skills across a range of scenarios. You can expect engaging keynote speakers, including road safety speakers directly impacted by road trauma, interactive road safety activities and critical learning outcomes dedicated to improved road safety behaviours.

We invite your school to be a part of this lifesaving event that includes young people in decision making and offers leadership opportunities.

Please include the ‘Road Safety Starts with Me’ Youth Summit event in your list of school excursions this year, and save the date for 16 May 2023. To reduce the risk of missing out, express your interest on behalf of your students today!
